Given the current explosion in people working from home, or in any number of remote environments, the need for possessing the right audio equipment is now more important than ever. At the forefront of this is the humble Headset, something that, until very recently in the business environment, appealed primarily to customer service and call centre agents. Now, however, the headset has become a key component for all those overcoming the hurdles introduced by our ever changing environment.

As with everything, choosing the perfect headset for remote work is based on a unique combination of your own needs and wants. That being said, we have outlined a number of factors below that can help you make this decision.

What is a Headset?

Headsets are valuable communication tools for businesses, particularly given the increase in people working remotely. Any quality headset will include a built in microphone, along with the specific audio delivery format, with the ultimate goal of allowing a seamless audio (or video) communication experience.

Headset vs Headphones

Often used interchangeably, there is one clear difference between a headset and some (most) headphones, this being the presence of an attached microphone. Our friends over at 3dInsider have put together a comprehensive comparison of the difference between the two (see here), however,  simply put, a headset is headphones with an attached microphone whereas headphones are just that, a pair of headphones.

Types of Headset

USB Headset

Connecting to your computer via a USB port, wired headsets can be seen as a cost-effective product choice, allowing for quick plug and play capabilities. For those who don’t have to be mobile while communicating, the Logitech H390 is a great choice for a USB headset.

Bluetooth/Wireless Headset

Do you need to be hands-free and mobile while working? If so, then a bluetooth headset allows you the freedom and flexibility to get more done on the move. As with everything, there is much to consider, such as bluetooth range, battery life and binaural (like the Plantronics Voyager B825-M Focus UC Stereo Bluetooth Headset) vs monaural (see Nuance Dragon Bluetooth Headset for example).

Gaming Headset

In order to create a realistic audio experience, Gaming Headsets, feature both stereo and surround sound to ensure a truly immersive gaming experience. With the popularity of team-based gaming, gaming headsets will also come with a built-in microphone.

Further to the types of headset outlined above, there will also be a number of other key attributes differentiating the many product variations on the market today. With this being the case, we will now further discuss the following factors with regards to their importance when deciding on the best headset for remote work:

  • Wired vs Wireless

  • Microphone Quality

  • Price

  • Form (On Ear, In Ear or Over Ear)

  • Noise Cancelling (ANC)

  • Software Compatibility

What factors are important to consider when buying a headset for remote work?

When purchasing a headset for remote work there are a number of factors to consider. We have identified the following areas as being highly important:

  • Wired vs Wireless

  • Microphone Quality

  • Price

  • Form (On Ear, In Ear or Over Ear)

  • Noise Cancelling (ANC)

  • Software Compatibility - as a company who sells software we see how often compatibility is overlooked

Wired vs Wireless

What is your desired freedom of mobility while communicating via your headset. Should you only need to use your headset in short bursts, while in a close proximity to your computer, then a wired connection may be suitable for you. If, on the other hand, a greater level of movement and flexibility  is required (or desired!) while communicating in your new home office environment you will need to focus your attention to headsets with a bluetooth/wireless connection. Please also remember to check the range of your bluetooth connection if you plan to travel too far away from your computer!

Microphone Quality

When thinking of noise-cancelling technology, most people only go so far as to look at this from the point of view of the person wearing the headset. What should also be considered, more importantly so it could be argued, is the quality of the sound being delivered in response. With this being the case, it is important to consider noise-cancelling technology available in the microphone. This is incredibly important if your home office is shared by many (and may also double as a home school/nursery), therefore creating a higher than usual level of background noise which you do not wish to project to those you are in communication with. Aside from this, it goes without saying that you want the microphone to be able to clearly pick up what you are saying!

Ultimately, it can be argued that price is the most undeniable factor in all of our purchasing decisions. With prices ranging from £40 to upwards of £200 there is certainly something for everyone, no matter your needs. That being said, as with everything, it certainly rings true that you get what you pay for so please keep this in mind! If you are interested in the higher end of the spectrum, we recommend checking out the Plantronics Voyager 5200 UC Advanced NC Bluetooth Headset. If you have a more modest budget, however, you cannot go wrong with the Plantronics Voyager Legend UC B235 Headset.

Form (In Ear, On Ear or Over Ear)

Although some break it down to a simple decision between In-Ear Headphones and On Ear/Over Ear, we believe that there are clear enough distinctions for each to hold their own. Firstly, you may be wondering, You may be wondering why use the name In-ear headphones/headset as opposed to earphones/earsets? To be honest, we wonder the same ! That out of the way, In-ear devices are typically more portable, provide a good natural noise reduction platform but can cause comfort issues for some users. An on ear headset, although not as bulky as the over ear models to be referenced shortly, are still relatively portable and comfortable however will require built in Activate Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology to really shine in a busy environment. Over ear models, finally, cover the ear entirely so provide natural noise reduction, which becomes even more effective when coupled with ANC. These over ear models tend to be more common within gaming headsets as opposed to those that would be used for remote work.

Noise Cancelling (ANC)

As alluded to earlier in the post, there are a huge number of newly minted remote workers who are also sharing their new home office space with a number of potential other activities. ANC really steps up to the plate here as the technology greatly reduces all background noise and distractions to allow you to really be in the call. An all time favourite of ours here at UKTechStore is the Plantronics Voyager Focus range which was the first wireless headset to include ANC technology!

Software Compatibility

Having begun life as a company that specialised in business software, we have become well aware of the oft overlooked (and highly necessary) factor of compatibility between software and software/software and hardware. We recommend always thoroughly checking compatibility prior to purchase and remember, if you are using a Mac, always check that the headset is compatible for use on Mac based operating systems! Further considerations should be taken when considering what the bulk of your headset usage is for. If you spend a lot of time using applications such as Zoom, Skype or Microsoft Teams then you really should consider finding a headset that is optimised for use with these programs.
